Covenant I was a part of a group exhibition A Woman in her place USA, El Dorado, Wichita: Kansas, Emory: Virginia 2015-17. The theme of the exhibition was to explore female identity and the place of women in society. The brief included a slip, a female undergarment, which was to be used to make an artwork and a quote by Rebecca Solnit, ‘a slip is something that no one sees you wearing but that changes the appearance of what everyone sees’.
For this artwork I transformed the slip into a sliptie that hung in the gallery amongst other artists works, preceding this on entry was an invite card that was a picture of me wearing the tie.
The original photograph is by Lorna Milburn. ‘She slips form grasp.’ is printed on the opposite side.
FRAMED: Her Body
Statement
by Stephanie Spindler
This work was done in 2023-2024.
Central to my work is how materiality, representation, and experience might shift ideological paradigms that systematically perpetuate stereotypes, normalize divisive practices, and diminish the body's holistic possibilities.
Framed: Her Body has come from exploring theoretical and pragmatic structures that are internalized into beliefs, cultural norms, and subjective perspectives.
Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, historical contexts, and contemporary discourses, my installation serves as a platform for dialogue and introspection. They invite viewers to confront their preconceptions and engage with the profound social and cultural implications of gendered embodiment.
